Dol pri Borovnici
Dol is an elongated settlement along the main road that leads from Borovnica to Vrhnika, right at the edge of the marshes where the largest plantation of Oregon blueberries in Slovenia are cultivated. Above the village runs the busy railway Ljubljana –Koper. At the end of the Word War II besides of the Borovnica’s viaduct the German army intended to blow up the one in Dol too, however as they ran out of explosives the beautiful arched structure of Dolinski or Jelenov viaduct dating from 1856 is still in function and is indeed the largest bridge of its type in the country.
The village has a few archaeological findings – a human skull and bones and many objects from the Copper and early Bronze Age.
3The name is associated with the interpretation of Slovenian word “dôl”, which means a small valley.
